The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires people to maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity, and leadership.
Coaching is a safe place where people can fully be themselves and, through conversation, discover new ways to achieve their desired outcomes. Through structured dialogue, coaches assist their clients to see new perspectives and achieve greater clarity about their thoughts, emotions and actions, and about the people and situations around them. The client gives power to the relationship, drives the coaching agenda, and is ultimately responsible for the outcome of the coaching engagement. Coaches apply specific techniques, skills, approaches, and methodologies that enable clients to develop their goals and design actions to achieve them.
The results can be life-changing. Clients often say they’ve created a new outlook on life – finding inspiration, courage, confidence, and answers to long-burning questions.
The ICF Core Competencies outline the baseline expectations of professional Coaches in all interactions:
..... Coaching is NOT about advice-giving!
The Code of Ethics is designed to provide appropriate guidelines, accountability, and enforceable standards of conduct for all ICF Members and ICF Credential-holders who commit to abiding by the ICF Code of Ethics.
